General Information The Spixi Snail is a beautiful apple snail species. I have found them to be very useful in my shrimp only tanks. Not only do Spixi Snails clean up excess food the shrimp do not eat I have also witnessed them eat hydra. The Spixi approached the hydra but when the antennae touched the hydra it jerked back as if stung. The Spixi then proceeded to move towards the hydra again. The Spixi reared up slightly, brought its mouth right on top of the hydra, plucked it off the glass and devoured it. They are a non-hermaphroditic snail, meaning there are both males and females. They are en egg laying species who lays their eggs under water in clutches. These clutches are easily identified and can be easily removed if desired. In my experience Spixi Snails will not overpopulate your tank. I believe this is because they are cannibalistic and they will eat their own young. Appearance Spixi Snails have a golden colored shell with black stripes that circle around the shell. Some of the individuals I have also have a purplish tint to their shell. The body of the snail is a grey-white color. |
